Short-billed Dowitcher

  1. Gale, is it possible my husband and I could have seen a female Bobwhite near the swamp on Pratt Rd near the rr tracks today, May 11? What other bird could have a similar chicken-like look with orange neck and be about 10 inches? Susanne

  2. It's possible but a Bobwhite in this area is most likely an escaped bird or one that was released for hunters. Could it have been a Ruffed Grouse?

  3. Similar but lacked both crested head and large tail. Also this bird was in the marshy area. We've never seen a rail...could it have been a Sora? Short bill, orange neck.

A great online resource for identifying birds can be found here: https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/search

  5. Thank you, Gale. I'll let you know if I figure it out. We've been back to that spot, but have not seen the bird again. BTW - love your photos and eBird observations! My husband and I have only been birding a few years.
