Snowy Owl

Spotted my first Snowy Owl of the season this morning.  It was quite far away for photos but it's nice to see them return!  It appears that we are in for another irruption this winter.  For an informative blog post on this unprecedented back-to-back Snowy Owl irruption, click here.

Sunset & Snowy Owls

Shared the sunset with two Snowy Owls in the Arkwright hills this evening.  I managed to get a pretty good photo of one of the owls even though it was taken after sunset and the light was fading fast.

The continuing Snowy Owl irruption in the northeast is incredible.  I spotted this young guy perched on a fence post right next to the road late this afternoon.

As the great Snowy Owl irruption continues in the northeast, I was able to get a few more photos just before sunset yesterday.  This is the same bird from different angles as it was getting dark.

The photo below was taken today and is a different owl from the one pictured above.

Several Common Redpolls were visiting the bird feeders in my yard today.

Pine Siskin

A flock of at least 18 Pine Siskin are visiting my feeders and bird bath fountain this weekend.

They are nomadic little finches so I don't know how long they will be around for us to enjoy their presence.

Evening Grosbeak Irruption

A flock of seven Evening Grosbeak has been visiting my sunflower feeders for the past four days.  They are not commonly seen in this area and it is the first time I've seen them here in over 10 years.

These aren't the best photos because I took them in the rain, but I haven't seen Evening Grosbeaks in years and was thrilled to see some show up at my bird feeders today!  I really hope they remain through the winter.  I recently read that this is an irruption year for them and here they are!
