Rusty Blackbird

The Rusty Blackbird is listed as a species in "steep decline" and they are quickly disappearing.  Scientists don't know exactly why, but it was recently discovered that many are plagued by high mercury contamination, especially in the northeastern section of North America.  This fact and habitat destruction are likely a big part of the problem.

This queen of the bird world has the ability to fly as fast as 240 mph when she dives!  This particular falcon had been injured and was in rehabilitation when I had the honor of taking her photo.

Northern Wheatear

We had a very rare visitor in our backyard today in Forestville, New York (Town of Sheridan).  The Northern Wheatear breeds in the high Arctic and migrates to Africa for the winter season.  This beauty was apparently thrown off course by recent tropical storms in the Atlantic Ocean and made a pit stop to feast on grasshoppers right outside my kitchen window! I'm still in awe of how the bird found the birder late in the day on this magical autumnal equinox.
