Black Swan on Lake Erie


A Black Swan in the Dunkirk NY harbor is way out of it's natural range (Australia & New Zealand).  It may have escaped from captivity somewhere but I did see it in flight and saw no leg bands.  Exotic birds such as this and kept in captivity usually have leg bands.

Hummingbirds have arrived!

Just before dark tonight, a pair of Ruby-throated Hummingbirds showed up at the feeders.  Welcome spring!

Baltimore Orioles have returned!

As I was racing out the door for work today, I spotted a male Oriole at one of my Hummingbird feeders.  Now that the Orioles are here I expect to see the Hummers any time now!

Hummingbird Migration

According to the spring migration map, the Ruby-throated Hummingbirds are getting close to western New York and there has been one confirmed sighting in Rochester.  Two of my hummingbird feeders are going up this morning in anticipation of their impending arrival.  As always, the travels of these little jewels never ceases to amaze me.  Click the link below to view the live migration map:
