Black-bellied Plover

  1. Great shots of a marathon traveler! Through encounters like Gale's with this Black-bellied Plover, we get to stand on a Lake Erie beach and rub shoulders with the Arctic tundra. It boggles my mind that, a few short weeks ago, many of the shorebirds that pause to rest and feed in Dunkirk Harbor were nesting among jaegers, Arctic foxes, and Snowy Owls under a midnight sun. And for me, the lonely whistle of the Black-bellied Plover evokes perfectly those vast, spare Arctic spaces from which the bird comes to us.
