Gale, is it possible my husband and I could have seen a female Bobwhite near the swamp on Pratt Rd near the rr tracks today, May 11? What other bird could have a similar chicken-like look with orange neck and be about 10 inches? Susanne
Similar but lacked both crested head and large tail. Also this bird was in the marshy area. We've never seen a rail...could it have been a Sora? Short bill, orange neck.
Thank you, Gale. I'll let you know if I figure it out. We've been back to that spot, but have not seen the bird again. BTW - love your photos and eBird observations! My husband and I have only been birding a few years.

ReplyDeleteIt's possible but a Bobwhite in this area is most likely an escaped bird or one that was released for hunters. Could it have been a Ruffed Grouse?

A great online resource for identifying birds can be found here: https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/search
