Spring Ephemerals

Trout Lily (Erythronium americanum)  These spring wildflowers live in old growth colonies that may be as much as 300 years old.

Spring Beauty (Claytonia virginica)

  1. Gale,

Great spring photographs. I always find trout lilies a challenge to photograph without laying right down on the forest floor. Then I feel bad about crushing other plants when I do it.

The plant in your bottom photo looks like Carolina Spring Beauty (Claytonia caroliniana)instead of Spring Beauty (C. virginica). The wide leaves are the key identifier. C virginica leaves are more grasslike.

Your spring came along about a week to ten days sooner than ours in Mid-Michigan. Our ephemerals have just taken off this week.
