Anhinga

The Anhinga is also known as the "water turkey."  It doesn't look anything like a turkey to me.

Bachman's Sparrow

Image
The Bachman's Sparrow is very uncommon and some of them live in the long leaf pine forests of the southern United States.  I photographed this beauty in the Carolina Sandhills National Wildlife Refuge today.

Common Yellowthroat and Indigo Bunting

Image
The Common Yellowthroat is a hyperactive little warbler that thrives in thick vegetation.  I was lucky to catch this guy out in the open.

And then he decided he would just sneak away...

While the Indigo Bunting thought I didn't see him at all.

Ruby-throated Hummingbirds

Image
Ruby-throated Hummingbirds have claimed their breeding territory in our yard.  The male (above) and female (below) have been driving out any other hummingbirds that dare to come near.  He has been making his "u" shaped courtship dive through the air to impress her.

The Magnolia Warbler breeds in the northern United States and southern Canada.  It spends the winter in the Caribbean Islands and Latin America.

A beautiful female Baltimore Oriole!

Tiger Swallowtail

Unusually warm May weather brought the first Tiger Swallowtail sighting of the year into our backyard today.
