Not a bird...

Image
Every Spring season, the Red Squirrels take over a few of our bird houses.  This year is no exception.

Grasshopper Sparrow

Image
The Grasshopper Sparrow nests on the ground in tall grass and vegetation.  Due to human activity such as mowing and pesticide use, the population of this handsome little bird is in a horrible decline.  It is listed as a species of "special concern" in New York State.

Mourning Warblers spend the winter in Latin and South America and breed right here in Western New York during the summer.

This amazing little warbler spends the winter in South America and migrates all the way north to the boreal forests of Canada and Alaska to breed and raise their young.

Hibiscus and a Hummingbird

Image
This tropical hibiscus is one of my houseplants.  After a flower opened yesterday, I placed it outdoors for the hummingbirds.  As soon as I turned to walk in the house, a male Ruby-throated Hummingbird was on it!

Blue-headed Vireo

Image
The Blue-headed Vireo's diet consists mainly of insects.  The photo below shows a Vireo with a very large flying insect on the branch next to it.  I don't know what went on between them, but it almost seemed like they were having a heart-to-heart discussion.  The Vireo eventually flew away and let the insect be.

Red Trillium
